Track 1 Competition

  Data Analysis & Machine Learning

The data analysis and machine learning competition will ask participants to analyze a complex dataset describing thousands of universities in the U.S. in order to develop and train predictive models to estimate missing values related to University enrollment, retention, and graduation rates.

 

Three prizes will be awarded to the top scorers:

  • Golden Vandal: a University of Idaho scholarship of $500.
  • Silver Vandal: a University of Idaho scholarship of $300.
  • Iron Vandal: a University of Idaho scholarship of $200.

All contestants with scores in the top 20 will receive additional fun prizes!

Track 2 Competition

  Data Visualization

Show off your most creative, engaging, and compelling data visualizations!  

Use any data you like, and represent them in the medium of your choice.  Posters, illustrations, figures, and digital interactives are all eligible.  Entries will be judged on the basis of their creativity, effectiveness, and the extent to which they integrate data.  Bonus points will be awarded to entries with compelling ties to the state of Idaho.

 

Prizes will be awarded to the top three submissions:

  • Golden Viz: a University of Idaho scholarship of $500.
  • Silver Viz: a University of Idaho scholarship of $300.
  • Bronze Viz: a University of Idaho scholarship of $200.

The University of Idaho Student Data Science Competition aims to promote Data Science research and education on campus. We expect participants in the competition and related communication channels to help make this a positive, welcoming, and constructive community that adds value to campus and beyond. When interacting with the community, we will all follow the basic rules of civility, inclusion, and respect.
